A video surfaced on social media showed patient reports being used as paper plates at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Mumbai. The paper plates made using patient reports appeared to contain vital information like patient details and medical procedures.
Former Mayor Kishori Pednekar shared the video on microblogging site X raising questions on the administration. “What is going on?? Administration wake up…! Don’t be so reckless,” Pednekar wrote in the X post.
In response, the hospital administration issued show-cause notices to six employees.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also formed a one-member committee, headed by the Deputy Commissioner (Public Health) to investigate the matter, an official was quoted by PTI as saying.
Dr Sangeeta Ravat, the Dean of KEM, clarified that the plates were not made from patient reports, but rather from old CT scan folders given to scrap dealers for recycling. “The only mistake was that these scrap papers were not shredded before being given away,” Dr Ravat was quoted by PTI as saying.
According to the BMC, patient reports are given to scrap vendors once they become old. In this case, however, the folders had not been shredded before being turned into paper plates.
