At least 4 people have lost their lives after Pune received record-breaking rainfall in the last 24 hours.
The Pune district in Maharashtra is grappling with a flood-like situation after experiencing heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. This deluge has submerged roads, caused knee-deep waterlogging from residential areas to markets and triggered landslides in several parts. The flooded roads, strewn with fallen trees, have brought the entire area to a standstill. Consequently, all schools and colleges in Pune were closed on July 25.
With the Khadakwasla Dam filled due to the incessant rainfall, the Pune administration released water into the Mutha River and issued an alert to residents along the riverbanks. Low-lying areas such as Ekta Nagar, Sinhagad Road and Pulachi Wadi experienced significant flooding. In a residential complex on Sinhagad Road, water levels rose to chest height, necessitating the evacuation of residents by boat. At least, four people have lost their lives in Pune. Social media is flooded with videos showing the extent of the deluge and how people are struggling to cope with the situation.

Lonavala, which saw rainfall with 370 mm recorded in only four hours is facing a flood-like situation. The authorities have warned tourists against traveling in Lonavala or other tourist places in the area. The downpour also led to the closure of the Pune-Kolad highway. The Veer Dam, located over the Neera River, is almost 85 percent full. A warning has been issued to residents living along the riverbank.
The IMD has forecast that Pune will receive extremely heavy rainfall in isolated ghat locations and moderate showers in the plains until Friday.
