High electricity bills can be a major worry during the summer season and people in various parts of the country are complaining about receiving bills with excessive amounts. In yet another case, a family in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh was in shock recently after they received an electricity bill of nearly Rs 3.9 lakh rupees for using basic household items, like a cooler, a fridge and two fans. According to India Today, an official from the electricity department later explained that the bill was high due to a technical error from their side.
Chandrashekhar, the homeowner, had not received any bills for the past few months. However, when he finally visited the local electricity office, he was taken aback by the unexpected bill amount.
Srikant Rangeela, the spokesperson from Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (Kesco), explained that the department was aware about the issue and confirmed that the high bill was generated by a technical glitch in the billing system. He also guaranteed that the problem would be resolved and the consumer would not have to pay the high bill.
Rangeela added, “Due to the changes made to the server of Kesco, some of the electricity meters have developed technical faults, due to which correct data could not be registered.”
According to ABP News, Chandrashekhar, who lives in Sanjay Nagar, Phoolbagh with his daughter and son-in-law, earns a monthly salary of just Rs 9000 and found it impossible to pay such a hefty amount. When the family received a bill of Rs 3.9 lakh, they struggled to correct the mistake as their complaints were ignored by officials. They claimed that even if they sold all their belongings, they couldn’t pay the bill, as their previous bills had never exceeded Rs 2000.
Recently, another man from Delhi couldn’t believe his eyes after he received a Rs 30,000 electricity bill for June. He took to Reddit to share his shock and posted a screenshot of the bill, which left many others equally stunned. Sharing the post, the user wrote, “How is this even possible? Bought new AC thinking it’ll save money. It did not, in fact, save money. 4 ACs, out of which at least 2 are running at a time.”
