A YouTuber’s interview with delivery agents from Swiggy and Zomato revealed some surprising insights into their monthly earnings.
Many employees with degrees from prestigious institutions are turning to side jobs as their primary income falls short of meeting their needs. This trend has significantly boosted the food delivery industry. Historically, delivery workers for Swiggy and Zomato had often voiced concerns about low wages and challenging working conditions. However, recent findings show a positive shift. A YouTuber from the channel Full Disclosure interviewed riders from both companies and discovered some surprising insights. According to the riders, they now earn between Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 per month, surpassing the average monthly income of IT workers. Remarkably, one worker even revealed he managed to save Rs 2 lakh in just six months.
The Zomato delivery agent explained, “I earn Rs 1500 – Rs 2000 daily. My weekly earning is about Rs 10,000 – 12,000 and I earn about Rs 40,000 – 50,000 per month. We get tips and incentives. From tips, we can earn up to Rs 5000 monthly. We get Rs 10 per km. We make more when it rains. It’s Rs 40,000 now, it’ll easily cross Rs 50,000 monthly. I do savings, I save about Rs 30,000 every month. I’ve already saved Rs 2 lakh, it’s been 6 months. I want to start a business in my village. A Dmart, I want to create employment opportunities for my people.”
Reacting to the video, a user wrote, “I also worked as a delivery partner but making 40k as delivery partner is not easy. You need to work more than 12 hours daily.”
An individual shared, “I didn’t know that even delivery boys make so much money. I’m tempted to buy a bike now.”
One more added, “The ending of this video made me realize it’s necessary to take risks sometimes for the things you love to do.”
The YouTuber explained that delivery partners for major food services like Swiggy and Zomato don’t work as full-time employees and they do not receive a fixed salary. Instead, they work on a flexible shift without a contract. They have three work options, full-time shifts of at least 8 hours, part-time shifts of at least 4 hours or they can pick two to three hours slots throughout the day. When working, the riders receive orders from the company and they don’t have an option to choose the delivery, which is assigned directly by the company. They only see the distance and earnings for each delivery. However, they can decline orders, but declining too can lead to penalties.
For every delivery, there is a fixed minimum payment. Zomato pays Rs 40 per delivery and Swiggy pays Rs 20, regardless of how far the delivery is, as long as it’s within the 5 km range. This means that whether a delivery is 500 meters or within 5 km, the base pay will remain the same. Other than the fixed amount, delivery agents earn close to Rs 10 for each extra km traveled beyond the base distance.
