People also complained about not being able to get a seat despite having confirmed tickets.

Overcrowded trains are currently a big issue, often leaving the passengers frustrated. From AC coaches crammed with ticketless passengers to aisles overflowing with people, it’s a huge and everyday challenge for Indian Railways. Many have expressed their concern over the poor management of trains on social media, especially in the last year or so when such instances have witnessed a massive spike.

Below is a listicle of the top weird overcrowding railway instances in 2024;

1. Ticketless Passengers Occupy Seats On Bhuj-Shalimar Express

A passenger on the Bhuj-Shalimar Express’s sleeper coach complained that unauthorised travellers crammed the compartment, causing commotion and disruption. In a post on X, the user described his miserable journey and how ticketless passengers occupied their allotted seats, leaving no room for his family to sit. He also uploaded a couple of photos of the train coach, which was filled with passengers. The train’s corridor was equally packed, with little room to walk.

Railway Sewa, the Railways’ official customer service account, responded to the tweet by assuring him prompt action.

2. Confirmed Ticket Holders Stranded at Chennai Central

Passengers were stuck at Chennai Central Station when several ticketless or unauthorised passengers flooded a Howrah-bound train. The situation made boarding the train practically impossible, with people occupying allocated beds and clogging passageways with their luggage. According to The Hindu, all reserved berths were grabbed by unauthorised visitors, who also left their belongings in the middle. Another witness, Vignesh from Madurai, whose friends and relatives came from West Bengal for a family wedding, stated that approximately 11 passengers, including women, with confirmed tickets, were unable to board the train’s S3 coach.

3. Ticketless woman occupies reserved seat on train

In April, a video showing a ticketless woman occupying a reserved seat on a train went viral. The woman can be seen haggling with her fellow passengers throughout the video, refusing to give up her seat. She even threatens them, claiming that she worked for Indian Railways.

The woman admits to travelling without a ticket but refuses to give up her seat. She even tells the customer, who reserved the seat to go find the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE), to get things resolved.

4. Man Flags Ticketless Passengers On Delhi-Bound Train

A passenger on the Delhi Sarai Rohilla SF Express shared on social media how ticketless passengers occupied the space outside his A1 cabin, preventing him from using the washroom. He further said that no one responded to his request after complaining to the attendant.

In a follow-up tweet, he said the individuals sitting outside were cleared once they got to know that he had tagged the Railway Minister in the post.

5. Ticketless Passengers Sitting On The Floor Of Sleeper Coach

A user on X (formerly Twitter) shared a video of ticketless people cramming the sleeper coach of the Suhaildev Superfast Express that he was travelling on. The train coach is filled with passengers, some of whom are seen sitting on the floor. The corridor was also packed, with limited space. As per reports, there was no Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) in the vicinity as the train approached Lucknow.
